Once upon a time, there was a season when every morning brought Christmas a little closer. In the Christian tradition, this season is called Advent, from the Latin adventus, meaning “arrival”. Its four weeks invite us to prepare our hearts to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
Families once lit candles and marked the passing days in chalk, making the wait visible. Printed calendars followed; in the early twentieth century, German publisher Gerhard Lang helped make them popular. In time, chocolate joined the tradition, bringing a small sweet surprise behind each little window.
